Our mission

Breaking the cycle of poverty through education in Huaraz, Peru

Why it matters

In Huaraz, many children aged 6–14 work in the streets to support their families. This forces them to sacrifice their education for immediate income.

Even at 18, financial barriers prevent many young people from pursuing higher education. Without support, they are trapped in short-term survival instead of investing in long-term opportunities. This cycle also impacts the local community’s development.

Seeds of Hope ensures that children and young adults can stay in school and thrive:

Education support (6–18 years old)

Homework help, workshops on nutrition, hygiene, well-being, and life skills.

Higher education support

Coverage of tuition, uniforms, study materials, and access to a safe study space.

Nutrition Project

Providing healthy meals after each session.

Supplies Drive

Funding school essentials such as uniforms, supplies, and medical fees

Our Impact

Though enrollment is free, hidden costs (~$15/month plus lost income) keep many from school. Seeds of Hope covers them so children can learn without financial strain.

Meet our team

President / Director: Yuri Fred Chavez Valdivia

Yuri was born and raised in Huaráz. Yuri has both a music and an accounting degree, teaching as a music teacher for a number of years and now working as a freelance accountant while running Seeds of Hope. Following graduation, he also spent seven years working as a teacher with different organizations involved with helping children in situations of extreme poverty. The knowledge he gained by working with these children, as well as getting to know the families of these children, gave him a profound insight into the problems of poverty-stricken children in the Áncash region, and he learned the difficulties associated with attempts to escape their socio-economic position. As a result, he founded Seeds of Hope in 2006, along with three volunteers with whom he was working with – Federica, Giovana and Rocio.

Volunteer coordinator :  Isabel van Loon

Hi everyone!

My name is Isabel, a primary school teacher from the Netherlands. I'm living in Huaraz with my Peruvian husband and currently work online as a Dutch teacher.

Since 2024, I have been the International Volunteer Coordinator at Seeds of Hope. I'm the first contact for new volunteers and Spanish students when they apply. I explain to them about Seeds of Hope, give them the information they need, and answer their questions, mostly before they arrive. I feel very thankful to be able to support the beautiful mission and get to know so many incredible people.

I'm looking forward to meeting you and helping you make sure you can be a part of Seeds of Hope and explore beautiful Huaraz!

Local Volunteer :  Gina Celestino
